The Center for After-School Excellence eNewsletter - May 2007
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Interested in going to college but not sure if you can afford it? Many individuals are unaware that they are eligible for various types of financial aid, loans, scholarships or grants. You may be eligible for financial aid if you are enrolled at least half-time (no less than six credits) in a degree seeking program, you are a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen, and you are making satisfactory academic progress. Most student aid is awarded based on financial need. Need is the difference between your budgeted cost of attendance and the amount you and your family are expected to contribute toward your education. Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the first step in learning how much financial aid you can receive. In addition, there are a few sources of aid such as unsubsidized Stafford and PLUS loans that are available regardless of need. Remember, the FAFSA form is free, so there is no reason not to apply. Though there is no deadline for the FAFSA, those individuals interested in taking the "Foundations in After-School" or "Excellence in After-School" certificate programs through The Center for After-School Excellence should to apply as soon as possible. In addition to the FAFSA, the Education Incentive Program (EIP) is a scholarship program for Child Care providers who work in a facility regulated by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services or the New York Department of Health. All courses offered through The Center for After-School Excellence qualify for EIP. You should confirm with your program or site coordinator that your program is licensed. The deadlines for EIP applications are based on when your courses start. For the Center courses which start this fall, applications for EIP are due between May 15 and December 1, 2007. We strongly recommend applying online for the FAFSA (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov) or EIP (http://www.tsg.suny.edu/olapps/EIPonlineapp07/). You may receive additional information on financial aid by contacting Damali Dublin at (212) 547-6963 or ddublin@afterschoolexcellence.org.
