Register Now for Winter Courses
The Center is opening up two new opportunities for you to expand your knowledge and after-school skills while you earn college credits. You can now register for the Winter, 2008 semester courses in the "Foundations in Education" certificate program at Hostos Community College in the Bronx, and the "Excellence in After-school" certificate program at York College in Queens. Among the topics the courses cover are communication in a professional setting, special education, psychology and youth development. Please visit The Center's website for more information.
Why enroll in a certificate program?
Working towards a degree puts you on the track for better-paying jobs and leadership positions. You will also earn preferred hiring status when you apply for jobs with many of New York's major after-school providers. The college credits you earn will be recognized for as long as you work, wherever you work in any part of the city or country.
Want to get a taste of college
studies in
after-school?
If you cannot immediately enroll in a college degree or certificate program, the Center also sponsors a two-day, Saturday continuing education course at Hunter College. The "Introductory Course for After-School Staff" offers a chance for after-school staff members to refresh and advance their knowledge with an overview of the after-school world, including insights into the relationship between community-based organizations and schools. It covers lesson planning, effective communication for classroom management, creative ways to resolve conflicts and tools for identifying kids' learning styles and strategies.
Sessions of the two-day course will be repeated on weekends throughout the academic year, with the first session being held on September 22 and 29.
For more information on these programs or to start the registration process visit us online at www.afterschoolexcellence.org or contact Damali Dublin at (646) 943-8848 / ddublin@afterschoolexcellence.org.
Center Certificate Programs Start Strong
Until now there have been few opportunities for after-school educators to earn credits or degrees in their field at the college level. Now, more than 45 after-school educators are enrolled in college credit-bearing courses at four City University of New York campuses, thanks to the partnership between CUNY and The Center for After-School Excellence. These pioneering students in the first ever Center professional certificate programs work in a variety of city and community-based agencies including the Police Athletic League (PAL), The Children's Aid Society, New York City Housing Authority, and New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
The Center held a four-day institute in August to help these after-school educators get ready for college by participating in activities such as college writing preparation, and a group project in which participants designed their own after-school program. Anwar Winston, a member of the incoming class at York College and head counselor at PAL, said, "I know there is so much more I could offer if I were given the chance to learn at the collegiate level. Not only do I feel I can benefit from this program, but others like me, who have a strong dedication to children, can look at this program and know that their options are not as limited as they think."
A New Face at the Center: Brandon V. Ray
The Center is pleased to welcome Brandon V. Ray as the new Special Assistant to the Executive Director. After learning about the Center from a colleague, he was drawn to what he sees as a new form of educational advocacy in professional development for after-school staff through higher education.
Brandon brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his work at the City Manager's office in Norfolk, VA. While there he worked on issues relating to homelessness, youth development, and green buildings. Brandon has also worked in the office of the president of the National Urban League.
A graduate of the prestigious National Urban Fellows masters program at the School of Public Affairs at Baruch College, Brandon received his B.A. in Business Administration from Howard University.
