New Continuing Education Course at Hunter The Center invites you to register for a new two-day continuing education course, "Working with Special Needs Students," at Hunter College. The course is targeted to the needs of after-school staff. During the course you will learn about the challenges of teaching special needs students, including English Language Learners (ELL) and students who have difficulties reading. You will learn new lesson planning methods that will help you engage youth at all academic levels. These include creating thematic units and learning materials. The first two-day session is Saturday, March 1 and March 8, 2008 from 9am to 3pm. Seating is limited. Contact Damali Dublin at (646) 943-8848 or ddublin@afterschoolexcellence.org for registration details. Police Athletic League (PAL) Launches Mentoring Program As one of the Center's Partners in Excellence, The Police Athletic League (PAL) shares the Center's commitment to professional development of after-school educators. PAL encourages its staff members to pursue personal and professional growth through college education.
Last month PAL launched a mentorship program for members of the staff who participate in the Center's Foundations and Excellence in After-School certificate programs. Created to offer another form of support as staff members further their education, mentors will provide professional guidance and share their insights with participants about how coursework relates to their careers. The induction ceremony was moving as mentors and and their partners stood before each other, recited promises and shed tears. Felix Urrutia, executive director, and Todd Seward, chief of programs, both spoke noting how proud they are of staff members who are taking college courses, and of the improvements they've seen thus far. Each speaker also stressed the importance of after-school educators furthering their own education to provide youth with the best services possible. The Center's certificate programs, along with PAL's mentorship program, serve as an excellent way to promote personal and professional growth. Scholarship Resource The City University of New York (CUNY) has compiled a list of scholarships that give monetary awards and other types of assistance intended to support both graduate and undergraduate students. Use this resource to look into additional ways of financing your higher education.
