The Center is grateful to our founding partner, The Atlantic Philanthropies, for its generous $2 million launch grant and invaluable guidance during our first year of planning, development, and program implementation. We also thank the Cornerstones for Kids Foundation, Independence Community Foundation, and William T. Grant Foundation for their invaluable support and partnership during our start-up phase.
In one year, The Center for After-School Excellence has successfully piloted coursework at LaGuardia Community College, Hunter College, and Columbia University’s Teachers College. Our research team launched two new studies and evaluated more than 100 local after-school sites.
We hosted a first-of-its kind academic conference on after-school at Teachers College in October, 2006, and convened a meeting of the nation’s leading research scholars in July, 2007. At that meeting scholars discussed the latest findings on after-school and an agenda for future study.
In fall, 2007, we will launch four college-level, credit-bearing certificate programs at four CUNY colleges New York City. This coursework will provide members of the after-school workforce with the tools they need to advance in their careers and serve children well.
None of these milestones would have been possible without the generosity of our key supporters. But there is still much more to be done. If you are interested in helping the Center provide avenues to higher education for young men and women who each day are helping kids throughout New York City to reach their highest potential, please consider a donation to the Center today.
