The Center is partnering with the City University of New York to offer professional certificates in after-school practice. After-school or youth workers can earn these certificates, and credits toward their college degrees, by taking a year-long series of courses at one of four CUNY college campuses in New York City.
Many of the major after-school organizations in New York City have made a commitment to give preference in hiring to those who have earned Center certificates at any of the four CUNY colleges.
Course offerings vary from campus to campus over the 2008-2009 academic year.
Staff members who take these courses will be better equipped to plan and lead lessons and exciting activities for kids of many ages and backgrounds who attend after-school programs. They will also learn to effectively manage classrooms and recreation and to help kids resolve their conflicts.
They will also make progress toward earning their college degrees and boosting their earning potential. They will acquire credits that will be recognized for as long as they work and wherever they work in their careers.
