Kingsborough Community College, in collaboration with The Center for After-School Excellence at TASC, will offer a four-course, ten college credit program during the 2008-2009 academic year entitled Foundations in After-School. All classes will be held on weekday mornings. Issues related to after-school will be discussed in all classes.
Foundations of American Education
This course will cover the effects of society, culture and institutions on the developmental needs of children with emphasis on the impact of urban life and the role of the educational system.
Independent Study: After-School Programs
This course introduces students to the growing field of after-school. It will provide students with an understanding of how politics, government, and society have impacted the after-school profession. Students will also become familiar with the components and resources needed to implement, manage, and evaluate after-school programs serving diverse communities. Students will conduct observations in an after-school program.
Art Workshop in Education
Art Workshop in Education Various art media are explored to understand principles, methods, planning and classroom organization necessary to achieve curricular and behavioral objectives of programs in education.
Music & Movement Workshop in Education
Music and Movement Workshop in Education Musical literature, methods and techniques for utilizing music and dance to achieve the curricular and behavioral objectives of programs in education.
General Psychology
The course is an introduction to psychology as a science. Topics covered include: historical background, fields, scientific methods, biological underpinnings of thought and behavior, learning and memory.
Program participant fee: $50 ($25 per semester)
