York College, in collaboration with The Center for After-School Excellence at TASC, will offer a new four-course, ten credit program during the 2008-2009 academic year entitled "Excellence in After-School." Issues related to after-school will be discussed in all classes.

Courses include:

Introduction to College Writing
This writing-intensive course will include research, reading and writing at the college level.

Teaching with Multimedia Technology
Students learn the foundations for using multimedia technology in the classroom, become proficient with multimedia technology, study issues of equity related to educational technology, and become familiar with and integrate NYS K-12 learning standards for technology into projects. Students design curriculum integrating the internet and student-produced multimedia projects. * Requires a waiver in basic computers.

Youth Development Theory & Practice
This course surveys the field of developmental psychology. Topics covered include: physical, cognitive, and social/emotional development, as well as the diversity of developmental needs across ages, abilities, culture and sociopolitical conditions.

Students must choose one of the following as their third course:

Creative Rhythms & Dance for Children
Students will learn movement-centered activities basic to children’s dance development.

Games & Sports for Children
Students will learn how to apply movement principles to games and sports for children.

Program participant fee: $50 ($25 per semester)
