The Center's Continuing Education courses offers a chance for after-school staff members to refresh and advance their knowledge in two days, without making the time commitment of enrolling in a college degree or certificate program.

All courses were developed with the needs of the after-school workforce in mind, and meet a number of Department of Health training requirements.

Sessions of each class will be repeated on weekends throughout the academic year.

  • Introduction to After-School Science

    This three-day continuing education course was created for after-school staff interested in exploring scientific theories, learning about inquiry-based science in after-school settings and the power of implementing science-based activities.  You will discover how to structure different projects and adapt science lessons to meet the needs of all types of student learners, especially those that are bilingual.

  • Strategies for Working with Children with Special Needs in After-School

    This six-day continuing education course was created for after-school staff who are interested in learning basic information about children with special needs, including those that are mentally and physically impaired. You will examine the conditions, needs, and services provided to exceptional persons with impairments that affect intellectual, and physical or sensory abilities. This course has been recommended for one college credit by the National Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction (National PONSI).  For more information visit: www.nationalponsi.org.

  • Youth Development for After-School Practitioners

    This three-day continuing education course was created for after-school staff whose classroom includes youth between the ages of 8 to 18. You will receive an overview of the different stages of youth development, learn strategies to manage behavior, and discover new ways to create program enhancements and lesson planning for youth. This course has been recommended for one college credit by the National Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction (National PONSI).  For more information visit: www.nationalponsi.org.

  • Introductory Course for After-School Staff

    The course provides an overview of the after-school world, including insights into the relationship between community-based organizations and schools. It covers lesson planning, effective communication for classroom management, creative ways to resolve conflicts and tools for identifying kids' learning styles and strategies.

  • Curriculum Strategies for ELL and Low Literacy Students

    This course provides an overview of the challenges of teaching special needs students, including English Language Learners (ELL) and students who have difficulties reading. You will learn new lesson planning methods that will help you engage youth at all academic levels. These include creating thematic units and learning materials.
